About Dr. Hussain

Dr. Mariam Hussain is a CA-licensed psychologist with specialty training in clinical neuropsychology. She provides both therapy and assessment services for patients with a wide range of medical, neurological, and psychiatric conditions such as dementia, brain injury, epilepsy, vascular disease/strokes, and movement disorders. She has worked in a variety of interdisciplinary settings such as academic medical centers, VA healthcare systems, outpatient clinics, inpatient hospital units, and in skilled nursing. In addition to completing specialty training in neuropsychology, she also received advanced clinical training in assessing and treating older adults, and completed advanced research fellowships in HIV and schizophrenia.

Despite Dr. Hussain’s specialized training in neuropsychology, she has continually sought to maintain a balance between assessment and psychotherapy throughout her career. Her approach to therapy integrates both humanistic and cognitive-behavioral models. Her process involves first using tools to assess where a patient is at and determine what treatment approaches might be most helpful for them, followed by a collaborative discussion with the patient to determine the best fit for therapy. She places a strong emphasis in evidence-based practices, or treatment approaches that have been tried and tested by scientists world-wide. She also incorporates measurement-based care, which involves assessing the severity of patient’s symptoms throughout time together in therapy, and adjusting treatment approaches if/when needed. She has experience treating a wide variety of psychiatric conditions including depression, anxiety, trauma, OCD, and cognitive compensatory training.

Dr. Hussain believes that compassion and empathy, coupled with strong training in scientifically-backed approaches, are the cornerstones of best patient outcomes. She looks forward to building these foundations with all her therapy and assessment patients.

“My interest in psychological assessment and treatment arose out of personal experiences my family went through having a loved one with an unclear cognitive and developmental disorder. Knowing what is going on is the first step in understanding how to approach a difficulty. I look forward to being able to provide this clarity for patients who may be experiencing cognitive or psychological challenges, and working with them towards achieving their goals. I strive to provide my patients with understanding, tailored recommendations, and real-world tools to help them be successful in their lives.”
